PABLO:

The world now knows of "the disappeared one", and that thousands of argentines suspected of resistance to the military regime were picked up, imprisoned, tortured, and killed; without warning , without legal process. Among these were thousands who were suspected only of knowing someone who was suspected of resistance. People were tortured and killed. People were torturers and killers. People were forced to become torturers and killers, and often were killed themselves.

Pablo: the presence of memory and the desperation to forget. From that moment on, harsh reality is tangible. They continue the arduous task of not remembering, because forgetting is almost impossible.

POTESTAD:

We witness the emotional "strip-tease" of a 52 year-old upper middleclass man who narrates, with obsessive and perverse subtlety, how strangers ("average men one is always trying to emulate") abduct his presumed daughter from his own home, in his wife´ s presence, thus invading his property. This "act of injustice" provokes a catharsis where hate and helplessness surface as clear symbols of a particular class and mentality that we recognize.

Potestad tries to illustrate one of the most shocking and aberrant aspects of Argentina´ s years of military dictatorship. During those years the security forces used to break into the homes of those considered politically militant, murdering them and seizing their children , particularly if they were very young or recently born, in order then to hand them over to military couples who had never been able to have children and were longing to do so. Some political prisoners were pregnant and gave birth inside prison; after childbirth they were killed and the newly born child was then handed over to an infertile couple, usually military or from the police. The "stolen children" were entered in the Civil Register as legitimate and were brought up in ignorance of their identity. Later on, under democracy, the initiatives of the Organizations of Human Rights and Psychological Assessment set about restoring these children to their original families.
