Those were the dark years in which Generals Onganía, Levingston and Lanusse from the “Argentine Revolution”, took turns to replace our weak democracy. However, the 70’s were significant in the career of GBH. This was
because he worked together with the writer, dramatist and historian G G Levene
and created the Historic Cycle of Theatre making a new version of “Mariano
Moreno”. They play was on for three years running (Colonial and Liceum
theatres), following this success came “Esteban Echeverria” and
“Rivadavia, el mulato”. In these difficult years, he became an active union worker for the White
List representing the Argentine Actors Association as its secretary. He became the founder and director of the CAT (Argentine Cooperative of Theatre) for all age public.
Some time later, he created the “ Didactic Theatre”, aimed at secondary
school students in their curricular periods. CAT, being a travelling group, specialised on performances for the public
in non-traditional places. More than 20 plays were set on scene, from the
Casacuberta Hall of General San Martin Theatre to sheds. Both private and
official theatres, as well as factories, courtyards, parks, churches and For more than 25 years he has been a hard and successful worker dealing
with his own plays and with those
of universal value. He was given a scholarship to study with Lee Strasberg , Director of
Actor’s Studio in the USA. He became the founder of an independent producing company: GATT,
Argentine Theatre Group for All ( Grupo argentino de teatro para todos). For a
year they worked at the IFT Theatre and they opened the “ First Theatre Fair”, an activity which had never
been thought of before. For the cycle “ Recitals” he set on scene the following artists:
Alfredo Zitarroza, Litto Nebbia, Victor Heredia, Homero Exposito, Hernán Oliva
and his Jazz Band, with 10 performances each one. Later, during the military dictatorship, with CAT they started working in
a house in the Constitution area of Buenos Aires. They made the
“Casona of GBH” a very warm place, similar to “ The Mamma” in the
USA. A workshop, the “Taller de Teatro” and the “Teatrino Libre”
functioned there. For 5 years , hundreds of pupils visited their classes, made
drama, and went on acting tours. |
