His beginnings.
He was born on April 13th in the capital city of Argentina.
His full name is Jorge Guillermo Farran Ben Hassan, a descendant of Arabs, from
Beirut, Lebanon. His ancestors have had a great impact on his humanistic and
political ideals. Son of Don Pedro and Doña Beatriz, both socialists, who
followed closely the thoughts of Alfredo Palacios and Alicia Moreau de Justo.
Liberty, ethics, decency, loyalty and respect were the common topics
discussed within the family and taken up by the growing number of friends.
Doña Beatriz, from the province of Corrientes was in the habit of
helping others, all were “needy relatives”, as Don Pedro used to say.
Her solidarity had no limits: “…You are lucky to have a meal a day. I
wonder how long it is since they last ate something.”
In this atmosphere, “Quito” (the nickname he had as a kid) grew up as
an only child until his sister, Stella Maris was born when he was eleven.
It was not easy to be the only boy in the family. He only had female
cousins so he was very much spoiled but demanded as well. The sole boy in an
Arabian family!
Although Doña Beatriz was not by birth an Arab, she had adopted the
customs and traditions, especially the dishes. She was the queen of the house, a
centre of permanent dialogue.
The theatre captured him since he was very young. At the age of fifteen,
he was asked to type the playscript of a newly born theatre group from the
“Santa Rita” church, where he was a boyscout.
That magic discovery was so
strong that he could never get away from this artistic world.
In that cast, directed by a priest that had arrived from Italy and
studied with Giorgio Strehler and Vittorio Gassman, he was the prompter and
assistant. And shortly afterwards took his first role.
Later, with schoolmates and young teachers of the secondary school, he
founded the “Hipolito Vieytes theatre college group”. Before leaving school,
he directed a musical comedy, the first interdisciplinary artistic event with
the participation of music, arts, social studies, and physical education
teachers.
